Okay, here's the first of Faye's many cosplay rants. Don't worry, they're not mean, just a collection of little hints and tips for Cosplay.
This months' topic (not that these will be updated monthly!) is authenticity. There's nothing that destroys a costume more than the wrong color, the wrong fabric or worse, the wrong garment.
First off, try to get the color that they wear. However, if you've combed every thrift shop and garage sale in the area and you can't find a navy-blue jumpsuit to be Jet Black in (I had to search all over for mine) then go with a color close to it--in the case of Jet Black, try grey or a lighter blue. Dye it if you can. (Never underestimate the power of dye!) Think about what the character would wear. However, don't just be lazy. Spike Spiegel wears blue. No question. Blue pants and jackets are EVERYWHERE. You just have to look. Go through your closets (My Spike pants come from my boyfriend's closet) In my opinion, if you're not going to do the character right, don't bother. You'll just look like a fool. If you absolutely can't find what you are looking for, E-MAIL ME and I'll make the costume. The bottom line is that most stuff is easy to find, if you look.
Along the lines of the character, think about fabric. A barbarian like Kyle cetainly wouldn't wear satin, just as Zelda wouldn't wear cotton. Sometimes the anime itself can give hints as to what a character wears. For instance, if you watch "Mushroom Samba" they you'll notice that the sunlight reflects off Radical Edward's shorts, thus hinting that they are spandex rather then denim or any other material. Do your homework, and your costume will be fantastic!
